Reforest The Risca with 3500 Sabine (27/09/2010)

The planting of 3,500 copies of Sabinas was conducted with the help of 40 volunteers.

The Otter Project is an initiative of Ecologists in Action Murcia Region, and one of the first activities of this fall has been developed in the town of Moratalla.

So there you have moved about 40 volunteers who have devoted the weekend to reforest former agricultural land near the dam of La Risca, to regain its natural state.

In this reforestation has planted some 3,500 copies of juniper (Juniperus thurifera) and Negreiros Sabina (Juniperus phoenicea).

Reforestation with Sabina Albar respond to this kind under the territories formerly selected, being considered as potential areas for development.

Therefore, the Sabina Albar is the preferred species in that place, and that is perfectly suited to this type of soil and climate of the Region of Murcia.

Both species are protected plants and play an important ecological and environmental function, being therefore a need to conserve and recover the few juniper forests in the Region of Murcia.

The junipers have left previous successful campaigns, taking more than 95% success rate.

Most have rooted normally and have a good growth in areas where it has been reforested.

During the development of reforestation activity in an area of incomparable scenery, the participants were welcomed to participate in an activity as rewarding as restore natural areas in the Region of Murcia, which otherwise would not be possible without the invaluable help of volunteers committed to the environment.

The Otter Project plans to carry out throughout the autumn several events open to the general public, with the next calls on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 October and Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November.

These two weekends will continue reforestation efforts in the area of La Risca.
